9780733623370.jpg

Join us on Sunday, August 20th at NOON (a little early this month due to Bookstore Baby's 1st Birthday!).

This month we will be reading "Across the Nightingale Floor" by Lian Hearn.

"In his black-walled fortress at Inuyama, the warlord Iida Sadamu surveys his famous nightingale floor. Constructed with exquisite skill, it sings at the tread of each human foot. No assassin can cross it unheard. The youth Takeo has been brought up in a remote mountain village among the Hidden, a reclusive and spiritual people who have taught him only the ways of peace. But unbeknownst to him, his father was a celebrated assassin and a member of the Tribe, an ancient network of families with extraordinary, preternatural skills. When Takeo's village is pillaged, he is rescued and adopted by the mysterious Lord Otori Shigeru. Under the tutelage of Shigeru, he learns that he too possesses the skills of the Tribe. And, with this knowledge, he embarks on a journey that will lead him across the famed nightingale floor—and to his own unimaginable destiny..."

You can find copies of the book at
The Neverending Bookshop, your local library, or where ever you find your books!

Emília, a naive romantic, dreams of falling in love with a gentleman and escaping to a big city. Quick-tempered Luzia also longs for escape, finding it in her craft and secret prayers to the saints she believes once saved her life. DEVOURERS-cover.jpg

For June, in honor of Sankara Imports' 5th anniversary, we will return to India to discover a different world through the lens of modern fantasy! The Devourers by Indra Das was named one of the best books of the year by The Washington Post.

"On a cool evening in Kolkata, India, beneath a full moon, as the whirling rhythms of traveling musicians fill the night, college professor Alok encounters a mysterious stranger with a bizarre confession and an extraordinary story. Tantalized by the man’s unfinished tale, Alok will do anything to hear its completion. So Alok agrees, at the stranger’s behest, to transcribe a collection of battered notebooks, weathered parchments, and once-living skins.

From these documents spills the chronicle of a race of people at once more than human yet kin to beasts, ruled by instincts and desires blood-deep and ages-old. The tale features a rough wanderer in seventeenth-century Mughal India who finds himself irrevocably drawn to a defiant woman—and destined to be torn asunder by two clashing worlds. With every passing chapter of beauty and brutality, Alok’s interest in the stranger grows and evolves into something darker and more urgent.

Shifting dreamlike between present and past with intoxicating language, visceral action, compelling characters, and stark emotion, The Devourers offers a reading experience quite unlike any other novel."

Copies of this novel can be found at The Neverending Bookshop, the local library, or wherever books are sold (or borrowed)!

We'll see you on Friday, June 16th at 5:30 PM at The Neverending Bookshop!

Sadaf is local mother of (soon to be) 3, who is originally from Pakistan. She learned to sew from her mother, who in turn learned to sew from her own mother. When Sadaf was a teenager, her mother worked for a company sewing clothes, and Sadaf would help her by sewing at home as well.

Now Sadaf is selling her clothes on her own! She uses the ideas and styles learned by working with her mother. She enjoys creating pretty color and pattern combinations. She does hand embroidery, crochet, and machine embroidery on her clothing and scarves.

Come meet Sadaf, ask questions about her craft, her process, and whatever else you are curious about. And, don't forget to book your tickets to the Block Party just after! You can have a unique new top or scarf to wear during the event!

Book Club - May

May 19 2017

cristina-henriquez.jpg

This month we will be reading the novel "The Book of Unknown Americans" by Cristina Henriquez. This book tells the story of two entwined families who have made their way to the US from South of the border. The book was named a New York Times and Washington Post Notable Book, an NPR Great Read, The Daily Beast's Novel of the Year, and a Mother Jones, Oprah.com, School Library Journal, and BookPage Best Book of the Year.

"When fifteen-year-old Maribel Rivera sustains a terrible injury, the Riveras leave behind a comfortable life in Mexico and risk everything to come to the United States so that Maribel can have the care she needs. Once they arrive, it’s not long before Maribel attracts the attention of Mayor Toro, the son of one of their new neighbors, who sees a kindred spirit in this beautiful, damaged outsider. Their love story sets in motion events that will have profound repercussions for everyone involved. Here Henríquez seamlessly interweaves the story of these star-crossed lovers, and of the Rivera and Toro families, with the testimonials of men and women who have come to the United States from all over Latin America. The Book of Unknown Americans is a stunning novel of hopes and dreams, guilt and love—a book that offers a resonant new definition of what it means to be American."

Copies are available at The Neverending Bookshop, your local library, and where ever books are sold (or borrowed!)

We'll see you on Friday, May 19th at 5:30 PM at The Neverending Bookshop!

But to accept the offer will mean giving up her place in her family to travel between the stars among strangers who do not share her ways or respect her customs.

Join us at The Neverending Bookshop (right next door) at 5:30 PM on Friday, April 21st. We can't wait to share our love of this book with you!

Main Street Enhancement

Mar 28 2017

As many of you know, there is a city initiative to make improvements to Main Street and the Downtown core of Bothell. In the wake of the fire last July, the city has bumped up the schedule and the enhancement project is set to start at the end of the month! Though it will overlap with the project to widen Bothell-Everett Highway, that project is almost complete and should be done at the end of May.

The official ground breaking will take place at 10 AM on March 28th. The project will be in full swing by May, and hopefully completed by November! In the mean time, you can always find free parking at City Hall just a couple blocks away, and our back door is always open (at least during our business hours).

We know that all of the construction is a hassle, and we appreciate your continued support throughout the process. The end results will be worth it!

Book Club - March

Mar 17 2017

handfullofstars.jpg

Our Book selection for this month's meeting is No Knives in the Kitchens of This City by the renouned Syrian author, Khled Khalifa.

"In the once beautiful city of Aleppo, one Syrian family descends into tragedy and ruin. Set between the 1960's and the 2000's, the book unravels the systems of fear and control under Assad. With eloquence and startling honesty, it speaks of the persecution of a whole society."

The group will meet on Friday, March 17 at 5:30 pm at the Neverending Bookshop (next door to Sankara on Main Place). Copies of the book are available at the local libraries, and at The Neverending Bookshop. We look forward to seeing you there! Everyone is welcome to join this free book group (due to reading material and themes, recommended for high school and above).
